Xbox party chat can fail because of headset routing, privacy settings, child-account restrictions, NAT type, or microphone permission on PC. Work through audio, account, and network checks in that order.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and the Xbox app on PC.

Use this if you cannot hear party members, they cannot hear you, or party audio cuts in and out during games.
Check your headset and audio settings
Headset selection and mixer volume are the most common causes.
- Press the Xbox button and open Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
- Under Headset, make sure the correct headset is selected.
- For a wired headset, unplug and firmly reseat the jack in the controller.
- For a wireless headset, confirm it is charged and paired.
- Open the party pane or mixer from the guide.
- Make sure Party chat volume is not muted or set too low.
- Test with another headset if available.
A console can choose the wrong audio device when several headsets or outputs are connected.
Check your privacy and online safety settings
Communication rules can silently block party chat, especially for child accounts.
- Open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy.
- Choose View details & customize.
- Open Communication & multiplayer.
- Allow voice and text communication with the people you want, such as Friends or Everyone.
- For child accounts, adjust settings from account.microsoft.com/family if required.
- Sign out and back in after changing privacy settings.
Some changes do not apply until the next sign-in.
Check NAT and the network
Party chat relies on network paths that can be blocked by Strict NAT.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings.
- Run Test network connection and check NAT type.
- If NAT is Strict, enable UPnP on the router or set up Xbox port forwarding.
- Restart the router and modem by unplugging them for about one minute.
- Reconnect and test party chat again.
If using the Xbox app on PC, open Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow the Xbox app to access the microphone.
