Xbox audio can fail through the TV, soundbar, receiver, or headset even when the picture looks fine. The quickest fix is to identify which audio path is affected.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One.

Use this if the Xbox powers on with video but no sound comes from the TV, soundbar, receiver, or headset.
Check the basics first
Simple volume and input checks catch many no-sound cases.
- Make sure the TV or soundbar is not muted.
- Use the TV or soundbar remote, not only the Xbox controller.
- Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
- Press the Xbox button and open Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
- Make sure Xbox volume is not muted there.
- Hold the Xbox button on the console for about 10 seconds to power it off fully.
- Turn the console back on and test audio again.
A full power-off clears temporary audio glitches better than a normal sleep or standby cycle.
Fix sound through your TV or soundbar
If TV or soundbar audio is missing, check Xbox output format and the HDMI path.
- Open Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
- Under HDMI audio, switch to Stereo uncompressed as a reliable baseline.
- If using ARC or eARC, enable ARC or eARC in the TV settings.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- In the TV audio menu, choose the correct output, such as TV Speaker or Audio System.
Some TVs and soundbars do not support every surround format the Xbox can output. Stereo uncompressed is a useful test setting.
Fix sound through a headset
If headset audio or party chat is missing, check headset routing separately.
- Check the headset’s physical volume dial or buttons.
- Open the Xbox guide mixer and raise Game and Party volume.
- Unplug and firmly reseat a wired headset in the controller jack.
- For wireless headsets, confirm the battery is charged and the headset is paired.
- Open Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories to confirm the Xbox sees it.
- Test the headset on another controller if possible.
If sound works on another TV or monitor, the original TV, soundbar, or HDMI setup is likely the cause.
If audio fails across multiple HDMI setups, use Settings > System > Console info > Reset console > Reset and keep my games & apps to restore settings without deleting the library. Also install pending system updates under Settings > System > Updates.
