Xbox installs usually stall because storage is tight, the download queue is jammed, the network is unstable, or a partial install is corrupted. Start with storage and queue checks before deleting more than needed.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One for purchased games and Game Pass installs.
Does this affect you?
Use this if a game stays at 0 percent, stalls at a specific percentage, fails mid-install, or sits behind other downloads forever.
Check storage space and the install queue
This fixes most install problems without starting from scratch.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Free extra space beyond the game’s listed size.
- Open My games & apps > Queue.
- Pause everything except the game you want now.
- Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.
- Hold the console Xbox button for about 10 seconds to restart fully.
- If installing to external storage, confirm the drive is connected and recognized.
Xbox needs room for temporary install and update files, not only the final game size.
Reset a specific stuck or corrupted install
Use this when one game stays stuck after storage, queue, and network checks.
- Highlight the stuck game in My games & apps.
- Press the Menu button.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the console.
- Reinstall the game from your library, disc, or Game Pass.
- If it sticks at the same point on Wi-Fi, retry over wired Ethernet.
Removing only the stuck title is usually enough. A full drive format is a true last resort because it removes every installed game and app on that drive.
External drive, queue, and ownership checks
For external drives, use a good cable, a rear USB port when possible, and confirm the drive is formatted for Xbox. Switch new installs to internal storage temporarily to test whether the drive is the cause.
Open My games & apps > Manage > Queue. Cancel failed items, then pause and resume the target game if it is trapped behind another error.
A game can install only when the owning account or active Game Pass subscription has rights on that console. Check My home Xbox and make sure the owning account is signed in.
If many downloads are stuck during an Xbox service outage, wait for Microsoft to restore service.
