Game Pass issues usually come from stale subscription status, the wrong Microsoft account, Home Xbox settings, billing trouble, storage, app updates, or a title that has left the catalog.
These steps apply to Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox consoles, Windows PC, and the Xbox app.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Game Pass games ask for purchase, will not install, will not launch, or your subscription is not recognized.
Sign out and back in to refresh your subscription
This forces Xbox to re-check your account with Microsoft.
- On console, open Profile & system.
- Select your profile and choose Sign out.
- Restart the console fully.
- Sign back into the Microsoft account that owns Game Pass.
- On PC, sign out of the Xbox app from the profile picture.
- Sign back in and try the game again.
Double-check the account if you use more than one Microsoft email.
Check your Home Xbox and subscription status
Home Xbox controls whether games are treated as owned on that console for other profiles and offline use.
- On the console, open Settings > Account > My Home Xbox.
- Set the console as your Home Xbox if it is your main system.
- Open account.microsoft.com in a browser.
- Go to Services & subscriptions.
- Confirm Game Pass is Active.
- Fix any failed payment or expired card.
A subscription that failed to renew can still look familiar on the console while access is already blocked.
Fix installation or app-specific errors
If the account is fine, troubleshoot the specific install or platform.
- Check console storage under Settings > System > Storage.
- Restart the Xbox app or restart the PC.
- Uninstall and reinstall only the affected title if one game fails.
- Update the console, Windows, and the Xbox app.
- Check whether your plan covers the platform you are using.
PC Game Pass, Console Game Pass, and Ultimate do not unlock exactly the same access. Check your plan under Services & subscriptions.
If a family member profile is playing, confirm whether the subscription owner is signed in or the console is set as Home Xbox.
Cloud Gaming can have outages separate from downloads. Also check the current Game Pass catalog for region restrictions or titles that rotated out.
