A washer stuck on wash keeps agitating, filling, or waiting while the timer refuses to move to rinse or spin. The cause is usually a safety switch, water-level issue, load problem, drain restriction, or control fault.
These steps apply to top-load and front-load washers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, and similar brands.

Use this when the washer keeps washing or filling without advancing. If it stops completely with a displayed error, start with the error code instead.
Check the lid or door switch
- On top-loaders, close the lid firmly and listen for the switch click.
- Make sure laundry is not holding the lid slightly open.
- Press gently on the lid while running only as a switch test; do not reach near the drum.
- On front-loaders, push the door firmly until the lock engages.
Check water level and load size
- Make sure hot and cold water valves are fully open.
- Do not overload the washer.
- Redistribute a load bunched to one side.
- Confirm you did not select Bulky, Sanitize, Heavy Duty, or another extended wash cycle.
Unplug the washer before opening a pump filter or panel. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready for trapped water. Never reach into the drum or agitator area while the machine is powered and mid-cycle.
Check for a drain restriction
- Power off the washer.
- Open the pump filter access if your model has one.
- Drain water slowly and remove lint, coins, or debris.
- Check the drain hose for kinks or a clogged standpipe.
- Reassemble and run Rinse & Spin.
An inconsistent lid switch is a common low-cost repair. Some washers also use a pressure switch and small air tube to sense water level; a kink, pinhole, or water in that tube can make the control wait forever.
If lid/door sensing, supply, load size, and drain are all fine but the washer still will not advance, the timer motor or main control board may be failing. That is a technician-level diagnosis.
