Washing Machine Not Spinning Clothes Dry: How to Fix It

Clothes that come out dripping wet mean the washer skipped, slowed, or cut short the spin cycle. Most causes are balance, drainage, latch sensing, or a drive part rather than a total failure.

These steps apply to many top-load and front-load washers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire, and similar brands built in the last 10 to 15 years.

Does this affect you?

If the washer completes the cycle but laundry is soaked, it may have refused high-speed spin because the load was uneven, water could not drain, or the door/lid switch was not confirmed.

Fix an unbalanced or overloaded wash

  • Open the washer and redistribute laundry evenly.
  • Do not wash one bulky item alone; add balancing pieces or use a Bulky/Bedding cycle.
  • Check that the washer is level front-to-back and side-to-side.
  • Adjust leveling feet and tighten lock nuts if present.
  • Run Spin Only to test.

Check the lid or door switch and drain

  • On top-loaders, close the lid firmly and listen for a click.
  • On front-loaders, push the door closed until it latches.
  • Check the drain hose for kinks.
  • Make sure the standpipe, sink, or drain is not clogged.
  • Run Drain & Spin to check drainage and spin together.

Unplug the washer before checking belts, pumps, motors, or underside areas. Turn off water before disconnecting hoses. Do not lean heavily on an open front-load door because the drum and door are heavy.

Check the drive belt on top-load washers

  • Unplug the washer and remove the rear access panel if your model has one.
  • Inspect the belt around the motor and tub/transmission pulley.
  • Replace a cracked, glazed, frayed, stretched, or snapped belt.
  • Check any belt tensioner listed in the manual.
  • Reinstall panels before testing.

Newer top-loaders may use a motor coupling instead of a belt. If agitation works but spin fails with rattling or grinding, the coupling may be broken.

If balance, level, latch, drain, and belt checks do not solve it, the lid switch, door lock, motor coupling, control board, or transmission may need service. Call a technician before opening the cabinet deeply, especially under warranty.
