A washer that trips a breaker is reporting an electrical problem, overload, or ground fault. Resetting once is reasonable. Repeatedly flipping the breaker back on is not a fix and can be dangerous.
These steps apply to standard top-load and front-load washers on dedicated 120-volt circuits, including GFCI-protected outlets or breakers.

A standard breaker trips from too much current. A GFCI trips when current leaks where it should not. A washer can trip either during startup, fill, wash, or spin, and the timing helps identify whether the issue is load, motor, moisture, wiring, or the circuit.
If the breaker trips again immediately, stop resetting it. Dry the floor and your hands before touching the plug. Do not open washer control panels or motor housings yourself when the unit is actively tripping protection.
Identify which kind of trip it is
- Check whether the tripped device is a normal breaker, GFCI outlet, GFCI breaker, or AFCI breaker.
- Note whether the washer is on a dedicated laundry circuit or shared with other outlets.
- Write down when it trips: power-on, fill, spin, or when water is present.
- A dedicated circuit that trips only with the washer points more toward the appliance.
Rule out overload and shared circuit first
- Unplug other devices on the same circuit, especially heaters, freezers, irons, or hair dryers.
- Plug the washer directly into the wall, not an extension cord or power strip.
- If the trip happens only during spin on an otherwise dedicated circuit, the motor or washer wiring may be involved.
- If GFCI trips during fill or spin, suspect moisture or current leakage inside the washer.
A GFCI that trips repeatedly is doing its job. Moisture in the motor area, door lock, pump, or wiring can create a real shock risk. Do not bypass the GFCI or replace it with a non-protected outlet just to keep the washer running.
An appliance technician can test the washer motor and wiring. If the washer tests clean, a licensed electrician should check the outlet, GFCI device, and home wiring.
