A washer that starts a cycle but stays dry usually is not receiving water, is not allowed to fill because the lid or door is not locked, or has clogged inlet screens. Check those before replacing parts.
These steps apply to Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire, Samsung, and similar top-load and front-load washers. Many Kenmore washers are Whirlpool-built, so the hose and valve layout is often similar.

No-fill symptoms can be silent or include a hum. Common causes are closed valves, kinked hoses, a door/lid switch that is not satisfied, sediment in inlet screens, low pressure, or a failed water inlet valve.
Check the water supply and lid or door
- Make sure both hot and cold wall valves are fully open.
- Inspect hoses for kinks, sharp bends, or pinches behind the washer.
- Confirm the top-load lid or front-load door is fully closed and latched.
- Restart the cycle from the beginning because some washers pause in sensing before filling.
Turn off water valves before disconnecting hoses. Unplug the washer before moving it or working behind it. Keep towels and a shallow container nearby because hoses hold water.
Clean the inlet screens
- With water off and washer unplugged, disconnect hot and cold hoses from the washer.
- Look inside each inlet port for the small mesh screen.
- Remove screens gently if needed with needle-nose pliers.
- Clean sediment or mineral flakes with a toothbrush under running water.
- Reinstall screens and reconnect hoses.
- Turn water on and check for leaks before running a short cycle.
Check the lid switch or door lock assembly
- On top-loaders, press the lid switch area and listen or feel for a click.
- On front-loaders, make sure the door lock engages after the door closes.
- Clean the gasket and latch area.
- If the switch or lock closes physically but the washer still will not fill, the assembly may need replacement.
If nearby faucets also have weak pressure, the home supply may be the cause. If supply, screens, pressure, and latch checks are good, the internal inlet valve may be stuck or burned out and should be tested by a technician.
