A washer that will not start is either completely dead or powered on but waiting for a condition before it begins. Identify which one you have before replacing parts.
These steps apply to most front-load and top-load washers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, and similar brands.
Does this affect you?
No lights or display usually means power is not reaching the washer. A lit display that will not start usually points to the door or lid latch, control lock, unbalanced load, or a control reset need.
Completely dead: no lights, no display
- Confirm the power cord is firmly plugged in.
- Test the outlet with a lamp or charger.
- Check nearby GFCI outlets and press Reset if tripped.
- Check the laundry room breaker.
- If outlet and breaker are good but the washer is dead, suspect the cord, fuse, or internal power circuit.
Powered on but the cycle will not start
- Close the door or lid firmly until it latches.
- Look for Control Lock or Child Lock and hold the lock button about three seconds to release it.
- Press Start/Pause after choosing the cycle; some models time out after setup.
- Redistribute a bulky or unbalanced load before retrying.
Unplug the washer before checking power-cord areas or opening panels. Do not force a latch that will not close; a broken latch should be replaced, not pried.
Check the door latch and lid switch mechanism
- On front-load washers, listen for the latch click when the door closes.
- On top-load washers, press down gently on the lid while pressing Start. If it runs only while pressed, the lid switch may be failing.
- Check front-load gaskets for clothing trapped in the door.
- Unplug for five minutes to reset the control board before moving to parts.
If the latch clicks but the washer still thinks the door is open, wiring between the latch and control board may be faulty. Door switches and boards usually require a multimeter and panel access.
Call a technician if power, lock settings, load balance, and basic latch checks do not restore startup.
