Front-load washers lock the door during the cycle so water and a spinning drum stay contained. Sometimes the lock does not release after the display says the cycle is done, leaving laundry trapped inside.
These steps apply mainly to front-load washers from Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Electrolux, and some top-load washers with locking lids.

A stuck washer lock can be caused by the normal post-cycle delay, standing water in the tub, a drain problem, a control glitch, or a failed lock assembly.
Wait it out, then power cycle
- Wait two to three minutes after the cycle ends.
- Press Power off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn the washer back on.
- Write down any error code that appears.
- If the door opens, run a short Rinse & Spin to confirm normal operation.
Check for standing water or an unfinished drain
- Look through the glass for standing water.
- Run Drain & Spin or Spin Only if water remains.
- Check the drain hose and pump filter if the washer will not drain.
- Try the door only after the tub is empty.
Never pry the washer door open. Door glass and latch parts can break, and hot water may still be inside. Unplug the washer before removing access panels or reaching for the manual release.
Manually release the door lock
- Unplug the washer.
- Find the manual release cord or lever. It is often near the lower front, behind the pump-filter door, or underneath the machine.
- Pull the cord steadily to release the lock.
- If the release is behind a kick panel, remove only the panel described in the manual.
- After opening, test whether the lock works on the next cycle.
If you need the manual release more than once, the lock assembly is likely failing. A lock that clicks but does not unlock, or unlocks only intermittently, is a common replaceable part.
Less often, the control board or wiring connector fails to send the unlock signal. Call a technician if manual release becomes routine or panel access is uncomfortable.
