
Modern washers do not always run a fixed timer. They sense load size, water condition, balance, and suds, then add time when needed. Some long cycles are normal, but a normal wash stretching to two hours deserves a check.
These steps apply to modern front-load and top-load washers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Electrolux, and similar brands with load sensing.
Does this affect you?
A washer that keeps adding time is usually responding to bulky cycles, overloaded drums, unbalanced loads, slow fill, or too much detergent. Less often, a load sensor or inlet valve is misreading conditions.
Check the cycle, load size, and balance
- Confirm you did not choose Bulky, Sanitize, Whites, or Heavy Duty, which can run 90 minutes to more than two hours by design.
- Use Normal, Quick Wash, or Express when speed matters and the load is suitable.
- Do not pack the tub tightly; overloading causes repeated spin retries.
- Avoid washing one bulky item alone. Add balancing items or split the load.
- Check water temperature settings because some machines add time to heat water internally.
Unplug the washer before checking hoses or panels. Do not force a front-load door open during spin; wait for the drum to stop and the lock to release.
Check water pressure and detergent amount
- Check a nearby faucet for weak water pressure.
- Make sure hot and cold valves behind the washer are fully open.
- Inspect fill hoses for kinks or pinches.
- Use HE detergent in HE washers.
- Use less detergent. Excess suds can trigger extra rinse cycles and add 20 to 30 minutes or more.
If cycle choice, load size, pressure, hoses, and detergent are all normal but cycle times keep growing, the washer may be misreading load weight or soil level. Sensors can drift or inlet valves can fill slowly even when hoses look fine.
Repeated rebalancing strains the motor and suspension. If long cycles are tied to chronic out-of-balance spin retries, wash smaller and more even loads for a while.
Call a technician if one specific cycle always runs far beyond its estimate or cycle times gradually increased over months with no change in use. Load sensors and inlet valves can be tested directly.
