Twitch two-factor authentication protects the account and is still required for monetization features such as payout onboarding or payment-detail changes. Setup is simple, but recovery depends on saved backup codes and current contact details.

Set up two-factor authentication
Twitch verifies a phone number first, then connects an authenticator app.
- On desktop, open Twitch Settings > Security and Privacy > Security.
- Under Two-Factor Authentication, choose Enable Two-Factor Authentication.
- Enter and verify your phone number with the text message code Twitch sends.
- Scan the QR code with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, or a password manager that supports codes.
- Enter the six-digit code from the authenticator app to confirm setup.
- Save Twitch’s backup codes somewhere separate from the phone.
If codes fail or the device is lost
Most failures are either a clock problem or a missing phone.
- If the authenticator code is rejected, set the phone’s date and time to automatic. Time drift breaks six-digit codes.
- Confirm you are reading the Twitch entry in the authenticator app, not a code for another service.
- If the phone was lost, wiped, or replaced, enter one saved backup code on the Twitch login screen.
- After signing in with a backup code, remove the old authenticator and set up 2FA again on the current phone.
- If you have no backup code and no authenticator access, use Twitch account recovery from the login page with the email or phone on file.

Store backup codes off the phone
A password manager or printed copy is better than a screenshot on the same phone that may be lost or wiped.
Keep the phone number current
Because Twitch uses a phone number during setup and recovery, an outdated number can complicate both. Update it under Security and Privacy.
Transfer before replacing a phone
Use the authenticator app’s transfer feature or remove and re-add Twitch 2FA before wiping the old phone.
Review connected apps
Settings > Connections lists third-party apps and extensions. Remove what you no longer use because 2FA does not stop an already-authorized app from acting on the account.
