Refurbished ink cartridges are usually remanufactured cartridges: empty original cartridges collected, cleaned, refilled, tested, and resold. They can save real money, but they are not identical to new manufacturer cartridges.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you have an HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, or similar cartridge-based inkjet and are considering remanufactured or third-party ink. This does not apply to refillable tank systems such as EcoTank.
What you gain and give up
The trade-offs are practical, not just brand marketing.
- Cost: remanufactured cartridges often cost 30 to 70 percent less than original cartridges.
- Print quality: everyday documents are usually fine from reputable sellers, but original cartridges tend to be more consistent for photos, color accuracy, and fade resistance.
- Clog risk: refill ink may not exactly match the printhead design, so poor-quality cartridges can raise nozzle-clog risk.
- Warranty: in the US, using third-party ink alone should not void the whole printer warranty, but damage caused by a leaking or defective cartridge may not be covered.
- Warnings: many printers show not-genuine messages. Some models, especially certain HP+ printers, may block non-original cartridges.
More control
Seller quality matters
Buy from established remanufacturers with model-specific reviews and a return policy. Ultra-cheap unbranded listings are more likely to leak, clog, or fail chip checks.
Check your printer model before buying
Search your exact printer model plus third-party ink to see whether it rejects non-original cartridges.
Mixing is usually fine
You can normally use a remanufactured black cartridge with original color cartridges, or the reverse, if the printer accepts each cartridge.
