Printer Will Not Print a PDF: How to Fix It

PDF file not printing from computer

PDF printing failures often come from the PDF viewer, a stuck queue, a complex scanned file, or a printer driver that cannot render the document cleanly. Test the printer with a simple file before assuming it is broken.

Does this affect you?

Use this when PDFs vanish from the queue, sit forever, or do nothing on Windows or Mac while other printing may still work.

Clear the queue and try another viewer

This fixes many silent PDF failures.

  1. Open the printer queue on Windows or Mac and cancel stuck jobs.
  2. On Windows, restart the Print Spooler service from Services.
  3. If printing from a browser PDF viewer, open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader or Preview on Mac instead.
  4. Try printing the PDF again.
  5. As a test, resave or export the PDF and print the new copy.

Handle large, complex, or damaged PDFs

Scanned PDFs and image-heavy files can overwhelm older printers.

  1. Check file size and page count.
  2. Compress or reduce the PDF size if it contains high-resolution scans.
  3. Print smaller page ranges instead of the entire file.
  4. Use Print as Image in Acrobat if available.
  5. Re-download or re-scan the file if it does not display correctly on screen.
  6. Update the printer driver from the manufacturer support site.

More control

Clear spooler files if jobs vanish repeatedly

Stop Print Spooler, delete files inside C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS, then start the service again when normal restart does not clear bad job data.

Use a simple test PDF

Printing a one-page known-good PDF tells you whether the problem is the printer setup or the original file.
