PS4 storage fills quickly because modern games and updates can take tens of gigabytes each. Before deleting at random, check exactly what is using the drive so you can remove the safest, largest items first.
These steps apply to PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro consoles.

Use this if the PS4 warns that storage is almost full, a game update will not install, or a new game needs more free space than the console has available.
See what’s using space and clear it out
Start with the built-in storage screen so you can see games, captures, themes, and save data separately.
- Open Settings > System Storage Management.
- Review the categories for Applications, Capture Gallery, Saved Data, and Themes.
- Open Applications to see installed games and apps sorted by size.
- Highlight a game you no longer play, press Options, and choose Delete.
- Open Capture Gallery and delete old screenshots and video clips, or copy important captures to a USB drive first.
- Review Saved Data for games you have uninstalled and no longer plan to play.
- Check Themes if you have downloaded many over time.
Deleting an installed game removes the game files, not your trophies. Save data is stored separately and can usually be kept for a future reinstall.
Add an external hard drive
If you regularly hit the storage limit, external storage is cheaper and easier than replacing the internal drive.
- Use a USB 3.0 external hard drive with at least 250 GB. PS4 supports extended storage up to 8 TB.
- Plug the drive directly into a PS4 USB port.
- Open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices.
- Select the drive and choose Format as Extended Storage.
- Back up anything already on the drive first because formatting erases it.
- After formatting, install new games to extended storage by default.
- To move existing games, open Storage Management, highlight a game, press Options, and choose Move to Extended Storage.
Keep the external drive connected whenever you play games installed on it. The PS4 needs constant access to extended storage and does not merge multiple extended drives into one pool.
What to delete first
Old capture videos often free space without touching your game library. Large games you are not playing are next. Saved data is usually small, so delete it only when you are sure you do not need it.
If cleaning old games and captures leaves comfortable space for updates, you probably do not need new storage yet. If the warning returns every few weeks, extended storage will save time.
