PS4 Safe Mode is a recovery menu that runs outside the normal Home screen. It is used for startup freezes, black screens, blue light problems, update failures, and system errors that do not clear normally.
These steps apply to PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles.

Use this if the PS4 will not start normally, is frozen, shows no picture after a display change, or a support guide tells you to use Safe Mode but you are not sure which option is safe.
Enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode does not appear automatically. You trigger it with the power button sequence.
- If the PS4 is on or frozen, hold the power button for about 7 seconds until it beeps twice and shuts off.
- Unplug unnecessary USB devices.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Keep holding past the first beep until you hear the second beep about 7 seconds later.
- Release the button after the second beep.
- Connect a DualShock 4 controller with a USB cable that carries data.
- Press the PS button on the controller to open the Safe Mode menu.
Safe Mode does not use Bluetooth for the controller. If the controller will not respond, try a different USB cable because some cables charge only and do not carry data.
Pick the right option
Start with the least destructive option that matches the problem. The later options can erase more data.
- Restart PS4 simply reboots the console. Use it first if you entered Safe Mode by mistake.
- Change Resolution resets video output to a safe display setting. Use it for black screen problems caused by display settings.
- Update System Software updates the PS4 from the internet or a USB update file without using the normal Home screen.
- Restore Default Settings resets console settings but does not delete games, saves, or installed content.
- Rebuild Database scans the drive and rebuilds the content index. It fixes many freezing, slow loading, and corrupted-data issues without deleting games or saves.
- Initialize PS4 is a factory reset that erases games, local saves, users, and accounts from the console.
- Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) also erases the console and reinstalls system software from a USB file. Use it only when the system software itself is badly damaged.
- Set HDCP Mode changes copy-protection output, useful for certain black screen issues on TVs and capture setups.
For most freezing and corrupted-data symptoms, Rebuild Database is the main repair to try before destructive reset options.
Back up before initialization
If you are considering Initialize PS4 or reinstalling system software, back up what you can first. When the console can boot normally, connect a USB drive formatted as exFAT or FAT32 and use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up PS4.
PlayStation Plus cloud saves remain tied to your account, and digital purchases can be downloaded again after signing back into PlayStation Network. Local saves without a cloud or USB backup can be lost during initialization.
If Safe Mode never appears, no beep sequence works, or every repair option fails, the issue is likely hardware or drive failure. At that point, contact PlayStation Support or a repair center instead of repeating resets.
