Modded Minecraft usually crashes because something does not match: the Minecraft version, mod loader, mod dependency, Java version, or memory allocation. Crash reports often name the problem if you know where to look.
These steps apply to modded Minecraft Java Edition using Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Console and Bedrock Edition do not support third-party Java-style mods.

Use this if Minecraft crashes after installing mods, a modpack will not launch, or a pack that used to work breaks after an update.
Check versions and read the crash log
- Confirm every mod is made for the exact Minecraft version you are launching.
- Confirm every mod is made for the loader you use: Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge.
- Update the loader to the matching version for that Minecraft release.
- Open .minecraft/crash-reports and find the newest crash report.
- Open it in a text editor and read the top section.
- Look for a named mod, mixin error, class not found message, or file path.
- Check that mod’s CurseForge or Modrinth page for dependencies and compatibility notes.
Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge mods are not interchangeable. A mod built for one loader can crash immediately on another.
Find conflicts by removing mods in batches
- Move half the mods out of the mods folder into a separate temporary folder.
- Launch the game with the remaining half.
- If it works, the problem is in the half you removed.
- If it still crashes, the problem is in the half still installed.
- Keep splitting the problem group until one or two mods are left.
- Update, downgrade, or remove the isolated mod.
This halving method is slower than guessing but much faster than testing dozens of mods one by one from the start.
Memory and Java checks
Large modpacks often need 4 to 8 GB of RAM. In the Minecraft Launcher, open Installations, edit the modded profile, show More Options, and raise the JVM value such as -Xmx4G. Do not allocate more than your PC can spare.
Use the Java version recommended by your loader. Newer Minecraft and mod loader builds may crash with an older Java runtime.
