Minecraft lag can come from render distance, chunk loading, resource packs, mods, server performance, RAM allocation, or background downloads. It is often one setting rather than the whole computer being too weak.
These steps apply to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on Windows and Mac, in singleplayer and multiplayer.

Use this if Minecraft stutters when new chunks load, runs at low FPS, freezes in menus, or lags only on multiplayer servers.
Lower render distance and video settings
- Open Options > Video Settings.
- Lower Render Distance to around 8 to 10 chunks.
- Set Graphics from Fancy to Fast.
- Set Smooth Lighting to Off or Minimum.
- Set Particles to Minimal.
- In Java Edition, check Max Framerate and make sure it is not capped too low.
- Return to a world and test movement.
Render Distance is usually the biggest Minecraft performance setting because every extra chunk adds more world data to calculate and draw.
Allocate more RAM in Java Edition
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Click Installations.
- Find the version you use and choose Edit.
- Click More Options.
- Find the JVM Arguments field.
- Change -Xmx2G to a higher value such as -Xmx4G.
- Do not set it higher than about half your system RAM.
- Save and relaunch Minecraft.
Check Settings > System > About on Windows if you do not know how much RAM the PC has.
Server, mod, and pack checks
If singleplayer is smooth but one multiplayer server lags, the server hardware, player count, redstone machines, or plugins may be the cause. Test another server before changing more local settings.
High-resolution resource packs and mods can add major CPU and GPU load. Remove anything installed right before the lag started.
For Java Edition, performance mods such as Sodium or OptiFine can help significantly. Download them only from official project pages and use a trusted mod loader such as Fabric where required.
Background downloads
Windows Update, game launchers, and cloud sync tools can cause chunk-loading stutter by competing for CPU, disk, and internet. Pause downloads before playing on lower-end PCs.
