Minecraft multiplayer can mean LAN play, public servers, private self-hosted servers, or Realms. Each connection type fails for different reasons, so start by identifying how you are trying to join.
These steps apply to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on PC, console, and mobile.

Use this if you cannot join a friend’s world, a server does not appear, a server times out, or Realms will not connect.
Fix LAN play on the same network
- Have the host open the world first.
- From the pause menu, choose Open to LAN.
- Select Start LAN World.
- Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi networks because they often isolate devices.
- Open Multiplayer on the joining device and wait for the LAN world to appear.
- Check the router for AP isolation or client isolation if it does not appear.
LAN discovery depends on devices being allowed to see each other on the local network.
Fix joining by server address
- Open Multiplayer and choose Add Server or edit the existing server.
- Check the server address carefully.
- Include the port after a colon if required, such as play.example.com:25565.
- If it times out, check whether the server itself is online.
- For self-hosted Java servers, forward port 25565 on the router.
Port forwarding is a router setting. Minecraft cannot make an outside friend reach a self-hosted server if the router blocks the port.
Fix Realms issues
- Sign into the Microsoft account that owns the Realm or received the invite.
- Confirm the Realms subscription is active.
- Restart Minecraft so invites and subscription status refresh.
- Search exact Realms error codes on the Minecraft Help Centre.
- Confirm whether the Realm is Java or Bedrock.
Java Realms and Bedrock Realms are separate services. Java Edition cannot directly join Bedrock Realms, and Bedrock cannot directly join Java Realms.
Firewall and version mismatch
On Windows, allow Minecraft, Minecraft Launcher, and Java through Windows Firewall for Private and Public networks if needed.
All players need the same major Minecraft version for the same world or server. If one player updated and another did not, the error may be version mismatch rather than a network problem.
