How to Set Up Wired Backhaul for Mesh Wi-Fi

Wireless mesh nodes normally talk to each other over Wi-Fi. Wired backhaul connects nodes with Ethernet instead, freeing wireless capacity for your devices and improving speed in larger homes.

Use this for mesh systems such as eero, Google Nest Wifi, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, ASUS ZenWiFi, and similar systems where satellite nodes have usable Ethernet ports.

Confirm support and plan the cable

Not every node can use wired backhaul.

  1. Check each node for an Ethernet LAN port. Some entry-level points have limited or no usable ports.
  2. Plan the cable route through attic, basement, crawlspace, wall plates, or along baseboards.
  3. Buy Cat5e or Cat6 long enough for the run with slack. Cat6 is a good choice for new permanent runs.
  4. If cable routing is not realistic, improve wireless node placement instead.

Connect the wired backhaul

Most systems detect Ethernet automatically.

  1. Plug one end of the cable into a LAN port on the main router or main mesh node. Do not use the internet/WAN port for the satellite run.
  2. Plug the other end into a LAN port on the satellite node.
  3. Power-cycle the satellite by unplugging it for about 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
  4. Open the mesh app and check the node connection type. It should show wired, Ethernet, or a cable icon.

Verify it is actually wired

A cable can be plugged in while the system still uses wireless if something is wrong.

  1. Open the app topology or network map and look for wired status.
  2. If the app is vague, run a speed test near the satellite and compare with speeds near the main router.
  3. If speeds still drop heavily, try a different cable.
  4. Confirm both ends are in LAN ports and test the port with another wired device.

More control

Use a switch for multiple nearby nodes or devices

If one cable reaches a far room, add an unmanaged Ethernet switch there and run short cables to nearby mesh nodes, TVs, consoles, or desktops.

Extra node ports can serve devices

Once the node itself uses wired backhaul, its spare LAN port is often available for a nearby smart TV, game console, or computer.
