How to Test Wi-Fi Signal Strength in Your Home

Wi-Fi bars are vague. Signal strength in dBm gives you a better view of where coverage drops and whether the fix is placement, a channel change, extender, mesh, or wired access point.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Wi-Fi feels weak in certain rooms and you want to measure the signal instead of guessing. It works with any router or mesh system from a phone, laptop, or tablet.

Check signal strength with a phone

Signal is measured in negative dBm numbers, where closer to zero is stronger.

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the info button beside the connected network for a rough signal indicator. For deeper readings, Wireless Diagnostics on a Mac is often easier than iPhone field tools.
  2. On Android, install a reputable Wi-Fi analyzer app because most Android settings show cellular signal more clearly than Wi-Fi dBm.
  3. Walk to each room where you use Wi-Fi.
  4. Pause in the actual usage spot, such as the desk, couch, or bed.
  5. Record the signal reading for each spot.

As a rough guide, -30 to -50 dBm is excellent, -50 to -60 is good, -60 to -70 is usable but can feel slow, and below -70 is weak enough to cause buffering or drops.

Use a Wi-Fi analyzer for a room map

Analyzer apps can show both signal strength and channel crowding.

  1. Install a Wi-Fi analyzer or WiFi Explorer-style app on a phone, Windows PC, or Mac.
  2. Connect to your home Wi-Fi and find the live dBm reading for your network.
  3. Measure each room from normal device locations rather than doorways.
  4. Compare adjacent rooms. A sharp drop may reveal a thick wall, appliance, mirror, or floor blocking signal.
  5. Check nearby channel usage if the app shows it. Crowded channels can hurt performance even when signal is acceptable.

Full bars can still feel slow

A good signal can still be congested by the band, channel, or too many devices using the network. Compare signal and speed before deciding.

Materials matter more than distance sometimes

Metal appliances, mirrors, brick, concrete, and floors between levels can weaken Wi-Fi more than a longer open path.

Below -70 dBm is a coverage clue

If a room you use often measures below -70 dBm, consider a mesh node, extender, or access point rather than endlessly tweaking the router.
