A MacBook keyboard problem can mean one key fails, several adjacent keys fail, wrong characters appear, or the entire built-in keyboard stops responding. Before assuming hardware failure, check input settings, accessibility features, software, debris, and spill history.
This applies to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with built-in keyboards.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if keys type nothing, type the wrong character, respond slowly, or work in some apps but not others.
Check Software and Settings
- Restart the Mac.
- Open System Settings > Keyboard and check Text Input/Input Sources for an unexpected language or layout.
- Open System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Slow Keys and Sticky Keys unless you use them intentionally.
- Test in TextEdit or Notes to see whether the issue is one app only.
- Test in a different user account to separate account settings from system or hardware issues.
Check Physical Causes
- Shut down the Mac.
- Turn it upside down and gently tap to loosen debris.
- Use compressed air at a low angle across the keyboard, not straight into one key.
- Look for sticky spill residue, especially if liquid ever reached the keyboard.
- On Intel models, reset SMC. On Apple Silicon, shut down fully and restart.
- Connect an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard to compare behavior.
What the Pattern Means
One or Two Keys
A few failing keys usually point to debris or individual key hardware. Careful cleaning or keyboard service is more useful than changing settings.
Adjacent Keys
Several neighboring keys failing together can indicate a keyboard connector or circuit issue that needs repair.
External Keyboard Works
If an external keyboard works perfectly while the built-in keyboard still fails, the problem is likely the built-in keyboard hardware.
Service Programs
