MacBook Keeps Freezing: How to Stop It

MacBook keeps freezing troubleshooting illustration

One freeze can be a random glitch. Repeated freezes, especially during the same task, usually mean a specific app, memory pressure, low storage, peripheral, startup item, or hardware problem is pushing the MacBook past stability.

This guide applies to Apple Silicon and Intel MacBooks on recent macOS versions.

Does This Affect You?

Use this when the cursor stops, apps stop responding, or freezes happen often enough that a restart is no longer a real fix.

Catch the Cause with Activity Monitor

  1. Open Activity Monitor and leave it open while you work.
  2. Watch Memory pressure. Yellow or red means the Mac is short on usable memory.
  3. Sort the CPU tab by % CPU to find processes pinned near 100 percent.
  4. Note what you were doing when the freeze happened, such as video calls, Chrome, a PDF, wake from sleep, or a connected drive.
  5. Force quit the offending app only when needed.

Free Up Memory and Storage

  1. Open Storage settings and make sure at least 10 to 15 GB is free.
  2. Delete large unneeded files and empty Trash.
  3. Remove unnecessary login items and background extensions.
  4. Close unused browser tabs and apps.
  5. Restart after cleanup so memory and background processes start fresh.

Rule Out Software Conflicts

  1. Install macOS updates.
  2. Boot into Safe Mode using the Apple Silicon or Intel method.
  3. If freezing stops in Safe Mode, suspect login items, fonts, extensions, drivers, or third-party utilities.
  4. Update or remove old VPN, antivirus, dock, backup, and system utility apps.
  5. Create a temporary user account and test there to isolate user-profile problems.
  6. Run Apple Diagnostics if freezing continues.

Advanced Freeze Clues

Kernel Panic

A restart message after a black screen indicates a kernel panic, often from hardware or driver conflicts, not just an app freeze.

Peripherals

Disconnect hubs, docks, external drives, and displays to see whether a connected device is causing system-wide freezes.

Wake from Sleep

If freezes happen after waking, adjust sleep settings and test with Power Nap/background wake behavior disabled where available.

Hardware Error

If Safe Mode does not help and Apple Diagnostics reports an error, take the MacBook for service.
