MacBook Not Charging: Full Troubleshooting Guide

MacBook not charging full troubleshooting illustration

A MacBook that is plugged in but not gaining battery can have a bad outlet, cable, adapter, port, debris issue, power-management glitch, battery setting, underpowered charger, heavy workload, or hardware fault.

This guide applies to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models using MagSafe or USB-C charging.

Does This Affect You?

Use this when the battery icon does not show charging, the percentage does not climb, or the charger light does not turn on.

Rule Out Cable, Adapter, Outlet, and Port

  1. Test the wall outlet with another device.
  2. Inspect the cable and both ends for damage.
  3. Try a known-good cable and power adapter with the correct wattage.
  4. Inspect the charging port with a flashlight and remove lint gently with a dry soft brush.
  5. Unplug both ends, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect firmly.
  6. Try another USB-C/Thunderbolt port if the MacBook has more than one.

Reset Power Handling

Apple Silicon

  1. Shut down from the Apple menu.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds, then release.
  4. Reconnect the charger and check the battery indicator.

Intel MacBook

  1. Shut down.
  2. Hold Shift + Control + Option plus the power button for about 10 seconds on built-in battery models.
  3. Release and start the Mac.
  4. Reconnect power and check the charging icon or MagSafe light.

Other Charging Causes

80 Percent Limit

If an 80% Limit is enabled in Battery Health settings, charging stops at that level by design.

Third-Party Chargers

Off-brand or underpowered chargers may be rejected or may not supply enough wattage. Test with an Apple or certified charger.

Power Drain While Plugged In

A heavy export, backup, or indexing task can use power as fast as a weak charger provides it. Check Activity Monitor’s Energy tab.

Hardware Diagnosis

If a known-good charger, cable, outlet, port test, and reset do not help, the battery, charging port, or logic board needs service.
