Mac Won’t Shut Down: How to Fix It

A Mac that hangs during shutdown is usually waiting on an app, unsaved document, background helper, peripheral, or stuck process. The goal is to close the blocker first, then force shutdown only when the Mac is unresponsive.

This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if Shut Down does nothing, the screen stays gray, or the Mac never powers off after you choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

Force Quit the Blocking App

1. Press Command + Option + Escape.
2. Look for apps marked Not Responding.
3. Select the app and click Force Quit.
4. If nothing is marked, quit open apps one by one with Command + Q so they can ask to save work.
5. Try Shut Down again after apps close.

Force Shutdown with the Power Button

1. Use this only if the Mac is frozen or Force Quit will not open.
2. Hold the power or Touch ID button for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black.
3. Wait about 10 seconds.
4. Press power again to start the Mac.
5. Test normal shutdown after the restart.

Find Repeated Shutdown Causes

1. Open Activity Monitor and sort CPU usage to look for a stuck process.
2. Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and disable unnecessary startup helpers.
3. Disconnect external drives, printers, docks, and hubs before shutting down to test peripherals.
4. On Intel Macs, reset NVRAM with Option + Command + P + R.
5. Install pending macOS updates.

Apps That Delay Shutdown

Backup tools, VPN clients, virtual machines, and sync utilities may delay shutdown while finishing work. Quit them manually before shutting down if they are the pattern.

Console Logs

Advanced users can check Console after a forced shutdown and search for shutdown-related messages to identify the process that timed out.

Safe Mode

If the Mac hangs even in Safe Mode after app and login-item cleanup, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
