Mac Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi: How to Fix It

Mac Wi-Fi not connecting troubleshooting illustration

A Mac can show a normal Wi-Fi icon and still fail to load pages. Most Wi-Fi problems are caused by a stale connection, router issue, saved network profile, DHCP/DNS problem, or local interference.

This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if the Mac will not join Wi-Fi, shows connected with no internet, or cannot load websites while other network details look normal.

Toggle Wi-Fi and Rejoin

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and wait about 10 seconds.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi back on.
  4. Select your network and enter the password again if prompted.
  5. Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds if it has been running for a long time.

Forget the Network

  1. Open System Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Click Details or the info button next to the network.
  3. Choose Forget This Network and confirm.
  4. Select the network again and enter the password.

Renew DHCP and Change DNS

  1. Open Wi-Fi details for the network.
  2. Open TCP/IP and click Renew DHCP Lease.
  3. If pages still fail, open DNS.
  4. Add public DNS servers such as 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1.
  5. Save and test a website.

Deeper Wi-Fi Checks

Wireless Diagnostics

Hold Option, click the Wi-Fi icon, and open Wireless Diagnostics. It can flag weak signal, interference, or router drops.

Fresh Network Location

Create a new network location in Network settings to bypass a corrupted configuration, then reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Crowded Channels

In apartment buildings, router channel congestion can cause trouble. Set the router channel to Auto if it is fixed to a crowded channel.

Hardware Clue

If the Mac cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, including a phone hotspot, the Wi-Fi hardware may need Apple diagnostics.
