Every MacBook Air uses a sealed internal battery. None of the modern Intel or Apple Silicon MacBook Air models have a user-removable battery, though service options vary by year and model.
This guide applies to Intel MacBook Air models and Apple Silicon MacBook Air models including M1, M2, M3, and M4 generations.

Use this if Battery Health has dropped, Service Recommended appears, or you are deciding whether replacement is available and worthwhile for your MacBook Air.
Check Battery Health First
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Click Battery Health.
- Check whether the condition says Normal or Service Recommended.
- Open System Settings > General > About > System Report > Power.
- Note the cycle count. Many MacBook Air batteries are rated around 1,000 cycles.
- If status is Normal but battery life is poor, check background apps and brightness before assuming replacement is needed.
Find Your Service Path
- Identify the model year and chip from About This Mac.
- Intel MacBook Air models from 2018 to 2020 are typically serviced by Apple or an authorized provider rather than at home.
- Apple Silicon MacBook Air models are also serviced by Apple or authorized providers, and some recent models may be eligible for Apple Self Service Repair.
- Check AppleCare+ or warranty coverage from About This Mac or Apple’s support site.
- Check current Apple pricing for your exact model and region before booking.
Book the Replacement
- Use an Apple Store appointment if one is nearby.
- Use mail-in service through Apple if that is more convenient.
- Use an Apple Authorized Service Provider for genuine-parts service outside an Apple Store.
- Back up with Time Machine or iCloud before service, even though battery work usually should not affect files.
- After service, check Battery Health and cycle count again.

Keep Optimized Battery Charging enabled so macOS can reduce long-term wear by delaying a full charge when appropriate.
Genuine Parts
Apple-sourced batteries preserve normal health reporting and safety expectations better than unknown third-party packs.

Battery Usage by App can reveal a runaway app that makes a healthy battery look weak.
Older Models
Vintage or obsolete MacBook Air models may have limited parts availability, so check Apple’s current support status.
