Your laptop keyboard backlight will not turn on, ignores the usual Fn shortcut, or turned off and will not return. This applies to backlit-keyboard laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and similar brands on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Some laptops do not include a backlight, so check the model specs if it never worked.
Does This Affect You?
A keyboard backlight that stays off is usually a shortcut, brightness, app, driver, or firmware setting issue rather than a failed LED strip. Many laptops cycle through off, low, and high brightness, so one accidental keypress can leave it on the off step.
Check the Keyboard Shortcut and Brightness Level
This is the most common fix.
- Look for a backlight icon on the top row, often on F5, F9, F11, or sometimes the spacebar.
- Press Fn plus that key several times, pausing briefly between presses. The shortcut often cycles off, low, high, and back to off.
- Test in a dim room so a low brightness level is visible.
- If the laptop has an ambient light sensor, check the manufacturer app for automatic backlight control and try manual brightness.
Check the Manufacturer Control App
Some systems let the app override the keyboard shortcut.
- Open the laptop control app, such as Dell Peripheral Manager, Alienware Command Center, HP OMEN Gaming Hub, HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, or Acer Care Center.
- Look for Keyboard, Lighting, or Backlight.
- Make sure keyboard lighting is enabled and not forced off by a profile.
- If the app is missing after a Windows reinstall or update, download the correct utility from the manufacturer page for your exact model.
Check BIOS Settings and Update Drivers
When shortcuts and software do not work, the setting may be firmware-level.
Changing a keyboard backlight option in BIOS does not affect your files. Avoid unrelated firmware changes. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk.
- Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI with the brand key, often F2, F10, Delete, or Esc.
- Look under System Configuration, Advanced, or keyboard settings for Keyboard Backlight or Illuminated Keyboard.
- Set it to enabled, save, and boot back into Windows.
- Open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, and update the keyboard driver.
- If the problem started after a Windows update, check the laptop support page for a newer hotkey, chipset, keyboard, or BIOS update.
Battery saver can turn off lighting on some laptops. Plug in the charger and disable Battery saver temporarily. If the backlight works before login but not after login, suspect a user-session app or driver. If it never works after a spill, drop, or physical incident, the LED strip or internal cable may need repair.
