Your laptop hinge feels loose, cracked, stiff, or no longer holds the lid at the right angle. Sometimes the screen flickers or goes dark when you move it. This applies to clamshell laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, and similar brands.

Laptop hinges take constant stress and often share space with display, webcam, and Wi-Fi antenna cables. A hinge problem can start as a mechanical crack and turn into a display cable repair if the lid keeps being forced. The goal is to prevent further damage and understand what a real repair requires.
Stop forcing the lid if the hinge grinds, binds, or separates from the case. Open and close with two hands, support both sides of the lid, and do not carry the laptop by the screen. If the hinge has separated, keep the laptop flat and avoid repeated movement until it is repaired. These steps are at your own risk; use repair support when unsure.
Check Whether It Is Just the Hinge or Also the Cables
Cable symptoms make the repair more involved.
- With the laptop off, gently move the display through only the safe part of its range. Do not push through resistance.
- Watch whether the screen flickers, goes black, or shows color bands at certain angles. Angle-specific display problems point to a pinched or damaged display cable.
- Notice whether Wi-Fi drops at certain lid positions, because antenna wires often route through the hinge area.
- Inspect the hinge area for cracked plastic, pulled-out brass inserts, separated metal brackets, or loose screws.
- If the display and Wi-Fi remain stable and only the case or hinge is loose, the repair may be limited to hinge or case parts.
Unlike RAM or battery replacement, hinge repair usually means opening the display bezel and base, disconnecting cables, replacing a hinge kit or case half, and routing cables correctly so they are not pinched again. A similar-looking part from another model often will not fit. Search by exact laptop model and part number if you plan to price parts.
A technician will usually remove the bezel, disconnect display and antenna cables, replace the failed hinge bracket or shell section, route the wires, and test the lid through its full movement. On older budget laptops, ask for a quote first; severe hinge damage plus a damaged display cable can approach the value of the machine.
