You press one key and another character appears, numbers show where letters should be, or one key double-types every time. This applies to laptop and desktop keyboards on Windows and separates software layout issues from physical key faults.
Does This Affect You?
Wrong characters across many keys usually means Windows is using the wrong keyboard layout or language. One sticky, repeating, or dead key is more likely physical debris or a failing switch.
Check the Keyboard Language and Layout
This fixes the most common software version of the problem.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region. On Windows 10, use Time & Language > Language.
- Open language options for your preferred language.
- Under Keyboards, confirm the layout matches your physical keyboard, such as US QWERTY, UK, QWERTZ, or AZERTY.
- Add the correct keyboard layout and remove the wrong one.
- Check the taskbar language indicator, such as ENG or US. Windows+Space cycles installed layouts and may have switched accidentally.
Rule Out NumLock and Accessibility Keys
Built-in keyboard features can imitate a broken layout.
- Check NumLock. On some laptops, letter keys such as U, I, O, J, K, L, and M become a numeric keypad when NumLock is active.
- Press NumLock or Fn+NumLock and test again.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Turn off Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Filter Keys unless you intentionally use them. Filter Keys can ignore or repeat input in ways that feel like a keyboard fault.
Clean a Physically Stuck or Double-Typing Key
Use this when one specific key misbehaves.
- Shut the laptop down and unplug the charger.
- Turn it upside down and gently shake it, or use compressed air at an angle under the affected key.
- If you are comfortable with the risk, lift a laptop keycap only with a non-metal tool and take a photo first so the clip orientation is clear.
- Clean lightly with a cotton swab dampened with isopropyl alcohol and let everything dry fully.
- Press the keycap back until it clicks, restart, and test.
Plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard. If the external keyboard types the same wrong characters, the issue is Windows layout or settings. If the external keyboard works normally, the built-in keyboard has a physical or driver problem. A stuck Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or Fn key can also make other keys produce symbols or shortcuts, so press each modifier and confirm it springs back.
If cleaning does not fix one bad laptop key and an external keyboard works, the internal keyboard assembly may need replacement. This is a standard repair and usually does not require replacing the whole laptop.
