Washing Machine Not Agitating? What to Check

If a top-load washer fills and sounds like it is running but the agitator or impeller does not move clothes, the issue is usually the lid switch, load size, cycle setting, or drive system.

These steps apply mainly to top-load washers with a center agitator or impeller from Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Kenmore, Samsung, and similar brands.

Does this affect you?

This guide is for washers that fill but do not move clothes during the wash phase. Front-load washers that do not tumble have different causes.

Check the lid switch and load size

  • Close the lid firmly and listen for a click.
  • Make sure nothing is holding the lid slightly open.
  • Do not overload the drum; laundry should move freely.
  • Confirm you selected a normal or heavy wash cycle, not soak or delicate.
  • Try a small light test load.

Check for a drive system issue

  • Listen during wash. A humming motor with no movement suggests a belt or coupling issue.
  • Check whether spin works even though agitation does not.
  • Note any burning rubber smell, which can point to a slipping belt.
  • Stop running the washer if a smell or grinding appears.

Unplug the washer before opening the cabinet or looking near the motor. Belt and coupling replacement require partial disassembly. Never run the washer with panels removed just to watch it work.

Older belt-driven washers can lose agitation if the belt slips or wears. Many newer models use a plastic motor coupling designed to break under heavy strain so the motor or transmission is protected.

If the lid switch is good, load and cycle are normal, and spin works but agitation does not, the drive belt or coupling is likely. An experienced owner may handle it, but for most people it is a quick technician repair.
