HughesNet Outage: How to Check and What to Do

HughesNet satellite dish and modem outage check

Satellite internet depends on a clear path between your dish and the satellite. Weather, snow, dish alignment, and data allowance limits can create symptoms that look very different from cable or fiber outages.

Does this affect you?

Use this for HughesNet satellite service with a HughesNet modem and outdoor dish when internet stops, slows dramatically, or the modem will not show online.

Rule out weather and line of sight

Weather is one of the most common satellite-internet problems.

  1. Look outside for heavy rain, snow, ice, or thick storm clouds that could weaken the signal.
  2. Check whether trees, new structures, or snow buildup block the dish view of the sky.
  3. If snow or ice is safely reachable from the ground, clear it gently. Do not climb onto a roof or ladder in bad weather.
  4. If the issue started with a storm, wait for conditions to clear. Service often returns within minutes to a couple of hours afterward.

Check data usage and service status

A high-speed data limit can feel like an outage when speeds drop sharply.

  1. Use cellular data to open the HughesNet app or MyHughesNet account.
  2. Check current data usage for the billing period.
  3. If high-speed data is used up, the connection may be slowed rather than fully disconnected.
  4. Check for service alerts or system status messages in the account.
  5. If needed, buy a data token or wait for the allowance to reset.

Restart the HughesNet modem

After weather and data checks, restart the equipment.

  1. Unplug the HughesNet modem power cable.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Wait 3 to 5 minutes for the satellite link to reconnect.
  5. Check for a solid Online or System Ready light.

More control

Check signal strength in the modem control center

The modem local status page can show signal strength and transmit/receive status. Weak signal in clear weather can point to dish alignment trouble.

High latency is normal for satellite

Satellite internet has more delay than cable or fiber because the signal travels to orbit and back. Video calls and online games can feel laggy even when the connection is working correctly.

Call support for long or physical issues

Call HughesNet if the outage lasts hours with no alert, the dish looks damaged or shifted, or signal remains weak on clear days. Those issues usually need a technician.
