Internet Keeps Disconnecting? How to Stop Random Drops

Router internet disconnecting intermittently

Random drops are frustrating because the connection often returns before you can identify the cause. The pattern usually comes from router/modem state, Wi-Fi interference, provider line trouble, or a device power/configuration setting.

Does this affect you?

Use this if internet works for a while, then drops for a minute or two, freezes calls, shows an exclamation mark, or makes phones switch to mobile data before recovering.

Restart modem and router in order

A proper power cycle clears temporary equipment states.

  1. Unplug the modem from power. If modem and router are one gateway, unplug that one device.
  2. Wait a full 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the modem back in and wait 1 to 2 minutes for normal lights.
  4. If the router is separate, plug it back in after the modem is stable and wait another minute.
  5. Reconnect and watch whether the connection holds for 10 to 15 minutes.

Rule out Wi-Fi interference

If wired devices stay online while Wi-Fi drops, focus on wireless conditions.

  1. Check distance from the router and the number of walls or floors between you and it.
  2. Move the router away from microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, mirrors, and large metal appliances.
  3. Try a less crowded Wi-Fi channel, especially in apartments.
  4. Connect one device with Ethernet as a comparison. If Ethernet is stable, the internet service itself may be fine.

Check the provider side

Outages and maintenance can cause repeated short drops.

  1. Use mobile data to check your provider outage map or app.
  2. Call support and ask whether there is known maintenance or a line-quality issue at your address.
  3. If the line tests clean, ask whether the modem firmware can be updated remotely.

More control

Disable Windows Wi-Fi power saving

In Device Manager, open Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter, choose Properties > Power Management, and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Check DHCP lease time

Very short DHCP leases can cause some devices to hiccup during renewals. In router LAN settings, 24 hours is a more typical lease time than 30 minutes.

Use logs when calling support

Windows Event Viewer and macOS Console can show exact disconnect times and adapter messages, which gives a technician something more precise than “it drops sometimes.”
