HP Wi-Fi setup failures usually come from a mistyped password, weak setup signal, 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz band mismatch, old saved network settings, or router security that the printer cannot use.

Redo wireless setup carefully
Start here even if setup already failed once.
- Move the printer close to the router for setup.
- Open Setup, Wireless, Network Setup, or Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer.
- Choose the exact Wi-Fi name. If you see a 5G or 5GHz version, choose the 2.4 GHz network instead.
- Enter the password carefully, checking capitalization and symbols.
- Wait for a solid Wi-Fi light or success message.
Fix a dual-band mismatch
Many HP printers support 2.4 GHz but not 5 GHz. Combined router names can confuse setup.
- Log into the router app or admin page.
- Find Wi-Fi band settings.
- Give 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz different names, such as HomeWiFi and HomeWiFi-5G.
- Save changes, then run printer setup again and choose the 2.4 GHz name.
Reset printer network settings
Use this when old network details may be stuck in the printer.
- On the printer, open Network Setup or Wireless Settings.
- Choose Restore Network Settings or Reset Network Settings.
- Confirm the reset.
- Run Wireless Setup Wizard again.
- If password entry keeps failing, try WPS by pressing the router WPS button and selecting WPS on the printer within two minutes.

Signal can block setup
A printer may fail to join from across the house but stay connected after setup. Configure it near the router first, then move it back.
Use WPA2 or mixed WPA2/WPA3
Very old WEP security and WPA3-only networks can both cause compatibility problems. WPA2 or mixed mode is usually safest for printers.
Try HP Smart setup
HP Smart often gives clearer setup errors than the printer screen, including password, band, and signal problems.
Check firmware
If the printer connects elsewhere but not to your router, check HP Smart or the printer menu for firmware updates.
