When an HP printer accepts a print command but nothing comes out, the cause is usually a connection, queue, driver, or default-printer issue. Start with simple checks before reinstalling anything.
Does this affect you?
Use this if an HP DeskJet, OfficeJet, ENVY, or LaserJet will not print from Windows, Mac, HP Smart, USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet and there is no obvious mechanical problem.
Check the basics first
These quick checks eliminate the most common causes.
- Make sure the printer is powered on, awake, and not showing a paper, ink, toner, or cover warning.
- Confirm paper is loaded correctly and the tray guides are not too tight.
- If using USB, unplug and reconnect both ends of the cable.
- If using Wi-Fi, confirm the wireless light is solid and the printer is on the same network as the computer.
- Restart the printer and wait until it is fully ready.
Clear the queue and choose the right printer
A single stuck job or wrong printer selection can stop everything behind it.
- On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the HP printer, and open the print queue.
- Cancel stuck or paused jobs.
- Open the Printer menu and make sure Use Printer Offline is not checked.
- Set the HP printer as default if jobs keep going somewhere else.
- On Mac, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select the printer, open the queue, and clear stuck jobs.
Use HP tools and refresh the driver
HP Smart can diagnose HP-specific connection problems.
- Open HP Smart and select the printer tile.
- Run Fix Printing Problems or the available printer diagnostic.
- If HP Smart cannot find the printer, reconnect Wi-Fi from the printer panel.
- Remove the printer entry and reinstall it from HP Smart or HP Support for your exact model.
- Print a test page after reinstalling.
More control
Try a second device
If a phone or another computer also cannot print, focus on the printer or network. If only one computer fails, focus on its queue, driver, or app settings.
Restart the spooler on Windows
When jobs stay frozen, restart the Print Spooler service from Services, then send a fresh test page.
A specific app can be the problem
If the test page prints but one document does not, export that file to PDF or try printing from another app.
