HP printers can show Offline even when powered on because HP Smart and Windows both manage the connection. A stale offline flag, queue problem, network discovery issue, or auto-off timer can all look the same.

Use this for HP DeskJet, OfficeJet, ENVY, and LaserJet printers on Windows 10 or Windows 11, especially when HP Smart or Windows says Offline.
Fix it through HP Smart
HP Smart checks HP-specific connection details that Windows may miss.
- Open HP Smart on the computer.
- Select the printer tile and open any warning details.
- Run Printer Status, Fix Printing Problems, or the available diagnostic.
- If HP Smart cannot find the printer, check the printer Wi-Fi icon and reconnect it from the Wireless menu.
- Print a test page from HP Smart once the printer is reachable.
Clear it from Windows print settings
Use this if HP Smart is unavailable or the issue remains.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer and open the print queue.
- Open the Printer menu and uncheck Use Printer Offline.
- Cancel stuck jobs in the queue.
- Remove the printer, add it again, and print a test page.
More control
Auto-Off can look like offline
Many HP inkjets fully power down after inactivity. Extend or disable Auto-Off in HP Smart under Power Management if the printer takes a long time to reappear.
Bonjour or full drivers may be missing
Older HP network discovery on Windows may need components from the full HP driver package, not only a generic Windows driver.
Remove duplicate entries
If Windows has two entries for the same printer, jobs may go to the offline one. Keep the working entry and remove stale duplicates.
Check firmware
HP has shipped firmware fixes for offline-status bugs on some models. Check Printer Update in HP Smart or on the printer panel.
