HP paper jams often hide outside the first place you check. A scrap can sit behind the tray, inside the rear door, near the duplexer, or around rollers while the main path looks clear.

Use this when an HP OfficeJet, DeskJet, ENVY, or LaserJet reports Paper Jam, whether or not you can see stuck paper. The jam is on the printer, not the computer.
Safety first
If this is a LaserJet and it was printing recently, avoid the fuser area near the rear or top door. It can stay hot enough to burn skin. Do not touch metal rollers or areas marked with heat-warning icons.
Clear the jam step by step
Work gently and pull paper in the direction it was feeding whenever possible.
- Open the main access cover and remove any visible paper slowly.
- Remove the paper tray and inspect the back of the tray slot with a flashlight.
- On LaserJet models, open the rear output door if the manual or on-screen instructions allow it.
- If paper tears, remove the remaining scrap with fingers rather than sharp tools that can scratch rollers or drums.
- Check front, rear, tray, duplexer, and output areas.
- Close every cover completely, then power cycle or print a test page.
More control
Match paper type settings
LaserJets adjust heat and feed speed based on paper type. Heavy or glossy paper can jam if the driver is still set to Plain.
Do not overfill the tray
Stay below the fill line. Too much paper makes pickup rollers grab multiple sheets.
Repeated jams may be rollers
If jams keep happening in the same spot on an older printer, worn pickup rollers may need cleaning or replacement. HP sells roller kits for many models.
