A one-time offline warning can be a stale connection. If an HP printer keeps flipping offline on a Mac, the cause is usually sleep or Auto-Off, a driver/AirPrint conflict, or a changing network address.
Does this affect you?
Use this for HP wireless inkjet and LaserJet printers on recent macOS versions when the printer works briefly, then drops offline again.
Turn down aggressive sleep or Auto-Off
This is the most common cause when the printer disappears after sitting idle.
- Open HP Smart on the Mac.
- Select the printer and open Printer Settings or the gear icon.
- Find Power Management, Sleep Mode, or Auto-Off.
- Set the sleep delay to the longest option or disable Auto-Off if allowed.
- If HP Smart does not show it, check Setup > Power Management on the printer panel.
Some HP printers fully power off after inactivity. During the wake-up period, macOS may report the printer as offline.
Switch between AirPrint and the HP driver
Using one connection method consistently can stop repeated flapping.
- Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Remove the HP printer.
- Add it again and inspect the Use dropdown.
- If it used the HP driver before, try AirPrint. If it already used AirPrint and failed, try the HP driver.
- Add the printer and print a test page.
Stop the printer IP address from changing
A stale saved address makes macOS lose the printer.
- Open your router admin page or router app.
- Find DHCP reservation, Static Lease, or LAN device settings.
- Reserve the same IP address for the HP printer.
- Restart the printer and re-add it on the Mac if needed.
More control
Remove duplicate printer entries
If the printer was added repeatedly, macOS may have both stable and stale entries. Remove them all and add one fresh entry.
Check HP firmware
Some HP+ and HP Smart-managed printers receive fixes for offline bugs through firmware updates. Check Printer Update in HP Smart.
Watch 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks
Older HP printers may stay on 2.4 GHz while the Mac roams differently. Separate band names can help diagnose this.
