HP Scan to Computer lets you start a scan from the printer control panel and send it to a computer. It fails when HP software is not running, the computer is asleep, the printer is on a different network, or the feature is disabled.
Does this affect you?
Use this if pressing Scan on an HP printer and choosing a computer does nothing, shows the computer as unavailable, or reports that scan to computer is not enabled.
Enable Scan to Computer in HP software
This feature usually depends on HP Smart, HP Easy Scan, or the full HP driver package.
- Make sure the printer and computer are on the same network.
- Open HP Smart or the HP printer assistant/scanning software on the computer.
- Add or select the printer.
- Look for Scan, Manage Scan to Computer, or similar settings and enable the feature.
- Keep the HP software running if your model requires it for panel-initiated scans.
Wake and reconnect the computer
The printer cannot send a scan to a sleeping or unreachable computer.
- Wake the computer and sign in.
- Temporarily disable VPN if it separates the computer from the local network.
- Restart the printer and computer.
- Try starting the scan from HP Smart on the computer first to confirm the scanner works.
- Then try the printer panel again.
Reinstall HP scanning components
Use this if the feature is missing or broken after updates.
- Remove the HP printer from Windows or macOS printer settings.
- Uninstall old HP printer utilities if they are clearly broken.
- Download HP Smart or the full driver package for the exact model from HP Support.
- Install, add the printer again, and enable Scan to Computer.
More control
Panel scanning is different from computer scanning
If scanning works from HP Smart but not from the printer panel, the scanner hardware is fine. The issue is the Scan to Computer destination service.
Use Scan to Email or USB as alternatives
Some HP models work more reliably with Scan to Email, Scan to USB, or scanning directly from the HP Smart app.
Firewall settings can block discovery
Windows Firewall or security suites may block HP discovery traffic. Allow HP Smart and HP scan services on private networks.
