Your HP laptop says plugged in, not charging, stays at 0 percent, or shows an amber or blinking battery light while the AC adapter is connected. This applies to HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook, ProBook, and similar Windows models with HP Support Assistant available.
Does This Affect You?
HP laptops include battery diagnostics and battery-care features that can explain charging problems faster than generic Windows settings. The issue may be a worn battery, underpowered adapter, stuck charging controller, BIOS bug, or an intentional charge limit.
Run HP Battery Check
Start with HP own diagnostic so you know whether the battery is healthy.
- Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu. If it is missing, download the version for your exact model from HP support.
- Select your laptop under My devices, then open Component Tests or Diagnostics.
- Run Battery Check. Note whether it reports healthy, calibration needed, weak, or failed.
- Check the wattage printed on the AC adapter and compare it with the laptop specification. A lower-wattage replacement charger may run the laptop but not charge it properly during use.
Reset the Battery Connection in Windows
Use this when HP Battery Check does not report a failed battery but charging is still stuck.
- Shut the laptop down completely and unplug the AC adapter.
- Hold the power button for about 15 seconds with power disconnected. HP often calls this a hard reset and uses it to clear stuck charging states.
- Plug the adapter back in, start the laptop, and check the battery icon.
- If it still will not charge, open Device Manager, expand Batteries, right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, choose Uninstall device, and restart so Windows reinstalls it.
Update BIOS and Check HP Power Manager
Some HP charging behavior is controlled outside normal Windows battery settings.
- Open HP Support Assistant and check for updates, especially BIOS updates that mention power, charging, or battery detection.
- Install BIOS updates only while plugged in, and do not interrupt the update once it starts.
- Check for HP Battery Health Manager or a battery-care setting. On many business models it is in BIOS/UEFI under power management, entered with F10 at startup.
- If a battery-care mode intentionally caps charge around 80 percent, the laptop is protecting battery lifespan rather than malfunctioning. Change the setting only if you need full charge capacity.
For models with a removable battery, shut down, unplug the adapter, remove the battery, check the metal contacts for dirt or corrosion, wait 30 seconds, and reseat it firmly. Do not open or remove internal batteries unless your model is designed for it. These steps are at your own risk.
If HP Battery Check says the battery failed and the laptop is still under warranty, check HP warranty service using the serial number. Out of warranty, buy a genuine HP or reputable exact-match replacement battery; incompatible third-party batteries can trigger the same not-charging message.
