How to Use Touchpad Gestures on a Windows Laptop

Using Windows laptop touchpad gestures

You want to use multi-finger gestures on a Windows laptop for scrolling, zooming, switching apps, viewing tasks, or moving between virtual desktops. This applies to laptops with Precision Touchpads, which are common on models made since around 2018. Older touchpads may support fewer gestures.

Does This Affect You?

Precision Touchpads give Windows a built-in gesture set similar to other modern trackpads. Most gestures work immediately, and the rest can be enabled, disabled, or reassigned in Settings.

The Built-In Gestures and What They Do

Try these on the touchpad with smooth, even finger movement.

  • Two-finger scroll: move two fingers up, down, left, or right to scroll pages and documents.
  • Two-finger tap: tap with two fingers to open the right-click menu.
  • Pinch to zoom: pinch two fingers together or spread them apart in apps and browsers that support zoom.
  • Three-finger swipe up: open Task View to see open windows.
  • Three-finger swipe down: show the desktop; swipe up again to restore windows.
  • Three-finger swipe left or right: switch between open apps.
  • Four-finger swipe left or right: move between virtual desktops.
  • Four-finger tap: open Notification Center or related quick settings depending on Windows version.

Turn Gestures On, Off, or Customize Them

Windows applies changes immediately, so test as you go.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
  2. If you see a full Precision Touchpad page, use the built-in controls. If a manufacturer app opens instead, configure gestures there.
  3. Under Taps, enable or disable one-finger click, two-finger right-click, and related tap behavior.
  4. Under Scroll & zoom, toggle two-finger scrolling, pinch zoom, and scroll direction.
  5. Use Three-finger gestures and Four-finger gestures dropdowns to switch apps, show desktop, open search, or disable gestures you do not want.
  6. Adjust Touchpad sensitivity if gestures trigger accidentally while typing or fail to register.

If three- and four-finger gestures feel unreliable, place fingers a little farther apart and lift them together. If the settings page is very limited, the laptop may use an older Synaptics or ELAN touchpad and need the manufacturer driver or control panel for extra gestures. External Precision Bluetooth trackpads generally use the same Windows touchpad settings.
