Integrated vs. Dedicated Graphics: What Is the Difference?

You are comparing laptops or desktops and one listing says integrated graphics while another lists dedicated or discrete graphics. Both handle what appears on screen, but they are built for very different workloads.

Does This Affect You?

Graphics choice affects gaming performance, video editing, 3D work, AI workloads, price, heat, and laptop battery life. Every computer has some way to display graphics, but not every computer has a separate graphics processor built for heavy visual work.

What Actually Separates the Two

The key difference is whether the graphics processor is part of the CPU or a separate component with its own memory.

  • Integrated graphics are built into the CPU and share system RAM. They are designed for the desktop, web browsing, video playback, office work, and light creative tasks.
  • Dedicated graphics, also called discrete graphics, use a separate GPU. In desktops it is often a removable graphics card; in laptops it is usually a separate chip on the motherboard. Dedicated GPUs typically have their own VRAM.
  • Performance is the big gap. A dedicated GPU can be many times faster for modern games, 3D rendering, video effects, GPU-accelerated exports, and local AI models.
  • Dedicated graphics cost more. They add purchase price, power draw, heat, and usually more fan noise. In laptops, they also reduce battery life when active.
  • Some laptops switch automatically. Gaming and creator laptops may use integrated graphics for light tasks and switch to the dedicated GPU for demanding apps through technology such as NVIDIA Optimus.

Which One You Actually Need

Choose based on the work the computer will really do.

  • Integrated graphics are enough for browsing, email, office documents, spreadsheets, video calls, streaming, and ordinary school or business use.
  • Dedicated graphics matter for most modern games, especially at higher resolution, higher refresh rate, or better quality settings.
  • Dedicated graphics also help with Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Lightroom, CAD, 3D modeling, rendering, and other GPU-aware creative tools.
  • Check listings carefully. If only a CPU is listed and no separate NVIDIA, AMD Radeon, or Intel Arc GPU is named, the system probably uses integrated graphics only.
  • On Windows, open Task Manager > Performance. A system with both may show GPU 0 and GPU 1; integrated-only systems usually show one GPU entry tied to Intel, AMD, or Apple/SoC graphics.

Modern integrated graphics are much better than old ones. Recent Intel Arc-branded integrated GPUs and AMD Radeon graphics inside Ryzen chips can handle light games at low settings, but they still do not replace a proper gaming GPU. On desktops, you can often add a graphics card later. On laptops, the GPU is almost always fixed at purchase.

AMD sometimes calls CPU-plus-strong-integrated-graphics chips APUs. They can be useful in budget desktops that avoid a dedicated card, but check benchmarks for the games or apps you care about before relying on one.
