How to Cancel ADT Service: What to Know Before You Call

Smart home troubleshooting category image

ADT cancellation is not usually handled with a self-service button in the app. For residential monitoring, you should expect to call ADT and speak with a representative.

These steps apply to residential ADT monitoring contracts and ADT+ app customers in the United States.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you are moving, switching providers, or dropping monthly monitoring. Before calling, check your contract so the final bill and any cancellation fee do not surprise you.

Check your contract before calling

Your contract determines whether cancellation is simple or expensive.

  1. Find your original ADT service agreement or contract.
  2. Search your email for the signup PDF or check Account > Documents in the ADT+ app if available.
  3. Look for the contract term, such as 12, 24, or 36 months.
  4. Compare the start date with today’s date to see whether you are still inside the commitment period.
  5. Find the early termination fee clause.
  6. Check whether the contract has already moved to month-to-month service.

Many contracts charge a percentage of the remaining monthly payments if you cancel early. If you are past the initial term, cancellation is usually easier, but confirm the details for your specific agreement.

Call ADT to cancel

Use the phone number from your bill or ADT’s official support page. Avoid random search-result phone numbers because security-company lookalike numbers exist.

  1. Call ADT customer service.
  2. Say clearly that you want to cancel monitoring service.
  3. Do not describe it as a pause or downgrade unless that is what you want.
  4. Verify your account with name, service address, and account number from a recent bill.
  5. Ask for the effective cancellation date.
  6. Ask for the final bill amount.
  7. If an early termination fee applies, ask for the exact amount before confirming.
  8. Request written confirmation by email.

The representative may offer a discount, transfer, pause, or lower plan to keep the account open. That is normal; you can decline if you have decided to cancel.

Equipment, final billing, and moving

ADT usually does not require panels, sensors, and cameras to be returned after residential cancellation, but policies can vary by contract type. Confirm this during the call.

Ask whether your current billing cycle is charged in full or prorated. Set a reminder to check the next bank or card statement so you can catch accidental continued billing quickly.

If you are moving, ask about transferring service to the new address before canceling outright. A transfer can sometimes avoid cancellation and new-install fees.

If you are switching to another security company, ask the new provider whether they can take over existing ADT-compatible panels or sensors. Some older systems can be reprogrammed instead of fully replaced.
