Echo devices do not automatically follow a new router or changed Wi-Fi password. Each Echo needs the new network details, just like a phone or laptop.
These steps apply to Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and other Alexa devices using the Alexa app on iOS or Android.

Use this if an Echo went offline after a router replacement, Wi-Fi name change, or password update. The exact screens vary by model, but each device must be updated individually.
Change Wi-Fi from the Alexa app
This is the standard method for Echo speakers and Echo Dot devices.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap Echo & Alexa.
- Select the exact device you want to update.
- Tap the gear icon for device settings.
- Choose Update Wi-Fi or Change Wi-Fi Network.
- Follow the prompts until the Echo enters setup mode and shows an orange light.
- Select the new Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the password carefully and wait for confirmation.
Repeat the process for every Echo in the home. There is no reliable bulk update button that changes the Wi-Fi network for all devices at once.
Put a stuck Echo into setup mode
If the Echo cannot receive the app’s Wi-Fi update prompt because it is fully offline, use setup mode.
- Find the Action button or reset control on the Echo.
- Hold the setup or Action button for about 5 seconds.
- Wait for the light ring to turn orange.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices > + > Add Device.
- Choose Amazon Echo and the correct device type.
- Select the new Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
This setup-mode step is lighter than a full factory reset on many models and normally does not erase every setting.
Change Wi-Fi on an Echo Show
Echo Show devices can change networks from their own screen.
- Swipe down from the top of the Echo Show display.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Network.
- Select the new network or forget the old one first.
- Enter the new password with the on-screen keyboard.
- Tap Connect.
If you are replacing a router, using the exact same Wi-Fi name and password as the old router can let many Echo devices reconnect without manual setup.
Older Echo models may require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If the new router uses a 5 GHz-only network or hides 2.4 GHz behind aggressive band steering, create a separate 2.4 GHz name during setup. Use your main home network, not a guest network with client isolation, because guest networks can block Alexa smart-home communication.
