If HBO Max will not open, spins forever, or crashes back to the TV home screen, the problem is usually local to the app or streaming device. Other apps may continue working normally.
These steps apply to HBO Max or Max on Samsung, LG, Vizio, Roku TV, Roku players, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and similar devices. The order matters: repair the app first, then update the device, then check the account and network.

Force-close and reinstall the app
A full reinstall clears app data that a normal restart may leave behind.
- Remove HBO Max or Max from the device. On Roku, highlight the app, press Star, and remove the channel. On Fire TV, use Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. On Apple TV or smart TVs, delete it from the app menu.
- Wait about 10 seconds after removal.
- Reinstall the app from the Roku Channel Store, Amazon Appstore, Apple App Store, Samsung/LG app store, or your device’s store.
- Open the app and sign in again with your account email and password, or complete the TV activation code flow.
If only this app was crashing, a reinstall often fixes the corrupted cache or local app files causing it.
Update your streaming device or TV
Streaming apps depend on the operating system of the device. An outdated TV or streaming stick can break one app while others still open.
- Roku: Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- Fire TV: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates.
- Samsung TV: Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.
- LG TV: Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates.
- Apple TV: Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
Install pending updates, allow the device to restart, then open HBO Max again. This is especially important after the app itself updates but the device software is behind.
Check account status and internet
Next, make sure the service and your account are actually available.
- Sign in at max.com from a phone or computer to confirm the account is active.
- Check the TV or streaming device network screen and confirm it is connected.
- If signal is weak, move the device closer to the router, switch to 5GHz Wi-Fi if available, or use Ethernet.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then waiting for it to reconnect fully.
If the app works on your phone using the same Wi-Fi but not on the TV, the problem is probably the TV or streaming device rather than your account or home internet.
Look for outages, stream limits, and old TV software
Streaming services can have short outages. Check an outage tracker or search for current reports before repeatedly reinstalling the app during a widespread problem.
Your plan may also limit simultaneous streams. If the error mentions too many devices or streams, stop playback on unused devices or sign them out from account device management at max.com.
Very old smart TVs may stop receiving app updates even though the app icon remains installed. If that is the case, a current Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, or Apple TV connected by HDMI is usually more reliable than the TV’s built-in app platform.
