HBO Max Subtitles Not Working? How to Fix Captions

Subtitles on HBO Max can fail in a few different ways. They may refuse to turn on, vanish partway through a show, display the wrong language, or appear so small or low-contrast that they are almost unreadable.

These steps apply to HBO Max or Max on smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, phones, tablets, and web browsers. In most cases, the fix is inside playback controls, profile language preferences, or the device’s accessibility caption settings.

Does this affect you?

Use this guide if subtitles or closed captions do not appear when selected, reset between titles, show a language you did not choose, or fail only inside HBO Max while captions work in other apps.

Turn subtitles on from playback controls

Caption settings are usually tied to the title currently playing, so start inside the video player.

  1. Start the show or movie.
  2. Press OK or Select on your remote, or tap the screen on mobile, to show playback controls.
  3. Choose the speech bubble, CC, Audio & Subtitles, or Subtitles menu.
  4. Select the subtitle language you want, or choose Off if you are turning captions off.
  5. If the language you want is missing, test another title to see whether that language is available elsewhere.

Do not assume the setting carries across every movie or show. HBO Max may require subtitles to be enabled again when you start a different title.

Set a default subtitle language

A profile-level default can reduce how often you need to enable subtitles manually.

  1. Open HBO Max or go to max.com on a phone, tablet, or browser.
  2. Sign in and select the profile you use on the TV.
  3. Open Settings or App Settings from the profile menu.
  4. Look for Subtitle Preferences, Audio and Subtitle Language, or a similar caption/language option.
  5. Set your preferred subtitle language and enable automatic subtitles if that option is available.

Subtitle defaults are usually profile-specific. If several people use separate profiles, set the preference on each profile that needs captions.

Restart, update, and test again

A stuck app or outdated build can prevent subtitle files from loading correctly.

  • Fully close HBO Max rather than just pressing Home.
  • Check the device app store for an HBO Max or Max update.
  • Restart the streaming device or smart TV. For a stick, unplug power for about 10 seconds.
  • Reopen the app, start the same title, and enable subtitles again from playback controls.

Subtitle display bugs are common targets for app updates, so updating the app and device is worth doing before changing every setting.

Check device caption settings and title limits

Some streaming devices apply system caption settings on top of app choices. On Roku, check Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. On Apple TV, check Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning. On Fire TV, check Settings > Accessibility > Captions.

If captions technically appear but are hard to see, adjust caption style: font size, color, background, opacity, and edge style. A bad style can make subtitles look missing when they are only blending into the video.

Not every title includes subtitles in every language. Older shows, licensed content, and titles with limited rights may have fewer subtitle options. If captions fail on one title across multiple devices but work elsewhere, report that title through Help & Support in the app or at help.max.com.
