If you are already signed into Gmail, changing your password is a quick security update. This is the proactive path, not the lost-access recovery path.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you can still sign into Gmail and want to change the password because of a reused password, security warning, breach notice, or routine upkeep.
Change your password from your Google Account
The same Google Account password controls Gmail and other Google services.
- On a computer, go to myaccount.google.com. On a phone, open Gmail, tap your profile photo, and choose Manage your Google Account.
- Open the Security tab.
- Under How you sign in to Google, choose Password.
- Re-enter the current password if Google asks.
- Enter the new password twice. Use at least 12 characters when possible and avoid anything reused elsewhere.
- Choose Change Password.
More control
Expect other devices to ask again
The new password applies immediately. Google may sign you out of Gmail, YouTube, Drive, and other Google apps on other devices as a safety measure. Sign back in with the new password.
Use Google’s suggested strong password
When the password field appears, Google may offer Suggest strong password. That is a good option if your browser or password manager will save it securely.
Run Security Checkup afterward
Go to myaccount.google.com/security-checkup to review recovery info, devices, connected apps, and account permissions. Turn on 2-Step Verification from the Security page if it is not already enabled.
