Fortnite frame drops usually come from heavy graphics settings, background apps, an outdated graphics driver, the wrong GPU, laptop power limits, or overheating. Start with the fast settings before chasing hardware upgrades.
These steps apply to Fortnite on Windows PC. Some ideas also help on Mac, while console frame rate is mostly controlled by the platform and game mode.

Use this if Fortnite feels choppy, stutters during fights, or cannot hold a stable frame rate on a PC that should handle it.
Turn on Performance Mode and key video settings
- Open Fortnite Settings.
- Go to the Video tab.
- Set Rendering Mode to Performance if your PC supports it.
- Set Frame Rate Limit to Unlimited or match it to your monitor refresh rate.
- Lower 3D Resolution to around 75 to 85 percent if FPS still swings.
- Turn off Motion Blur, Vignette, and Ray Tracing.
- Set View Distance to Medium instead of Epic if you need more performance.
Performance Mode can add a major FPS improvement on modest PCs because it uses a lighter rendering path.
Free up the PC while Fortnite runs
- Close browsers with many tabs.
- Disable Discord and launcher overlays you do not need.
- Close streaming and recording tools unless actively using them.
- Open Task Manager and sort by CPU or GPU to find heavy background apps.
- Restart the PC occasionally instead of only using sleep.
In Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add Fortnite if needed and set it to High performance so Windows uses the dedicated GPU instead of integrated graphics.
Drivers, laptop power, and temperatures
Update the GPU driver through NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel tools and restart afterward. A stale driver can cause poor performance that no in-game setting fixes.
On a laptop, plug in power and set Windows power mode to Best performance. Many laptops throttle heavily on battery.
If FPS gets worse the longer you play, check temperatures with a monitoring tool. Sustained temperatures above roughly 85 C on a GPU or 90 C on a CPU can indicate thermal throttling, poor airflow, or old thermal paste.
Know the practical ceiling
If your GPU is several generations old or below Fortnite’s recommended specs, Performance Mode at low settings may be the realistic limit. Past that point, a hardware upgrade is more effective than another tiny setting change.
