Epic Games Launcher Won’t Open? How to Fix It

If the Epic Games Launcher does nothing or closes after the splash screen, it is usually stuck in the background or has a damaged launcher file. A full game reinstall is rarely the first thing to try.

These steps apply to the Epic Games Launcher on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Does this affect you?

Use this if clicking the Epic Games Launcher icon opens nothing, flashes briefly, or never reaches your library.

Close stuck background processes

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Open the Details or Processes tab.
  3. Find EpicGamesLauncher.exe and EpicWebHelper.exe.
  4. Right-click each one and choose End Task.
  5. End all duplicate entries.
  6. Wait about 10 seconds.
  7. Open the launcher again from Start or the desktop shortcut.

If the launcher still will not open, restart the PC completely. That clears processes Task Manager may have missed.

Repair or reinstall the launcher

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Find Epic Games Launcher.
  3. Choose Modify if available.
  4. Run Repair and let it finish.
  5. If Repair is missing or fails, uninstall Epic Games Launcher.
  6. Download a fresh installer from Epic’s official website.
  7. Install it and sign in again.

Installed games usually remain on the drive. After reinstalling the launcher, Epic can often detect and verify them instead of downloading everything again.

Check permissions, antivirus, and outages

Temporarily check third-party antivirus or firewall software if it recently quarantined or blocked an Epic component. Turn protection back on after testing.

Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If that works, Windows permissions may be blocking writes to launcher folders.

If the launcher fails around a major sale, free game release, or outage, check Epic’s official status page before reinstalling. If the first launch of the day often fails, review Task Manager > Startup apps and disable overlay or launcher software you do not need at boot.
