Fortnite crashes usually come from a damaged file, a driver that does not match the latest patch, storage trouble, or background software conflicting with anti-cheat. Console crashes are more often cache or install related than driver related.
These steps apply to Fortnite on Windows PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

Verify game files on PC
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Go to Library.
- Find Fortnite and click the three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify.
- Let the scan repair or redownload damaged files.
- Launch Fortnite again after it finishes.
This is the best first step after a large update because corrupted files are common crash triggers.
Update graphics drivers on PC
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters to identify your GPU.
- Download the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Choose Clean Install if the installer offers it.
- Restart the PC before opening Fortnite.
Fortnite updates frequently, so an older driver can become unstable after a new season or engine update.
Clear cache on console
On PlayStation:
- Fully close Fortnite.
- Hold the console power button until it beeps and shuts down completely.
- Wait 30 seconds and restart.
- If crashes continue on PS5, boot Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
On Xbox:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Highlight Fortnite in My games & apps.
- Press Menu and choose Quit.
- Hold the console power button for about 10 seconds.
- Turn it back on and relaunch Fortnite.
Background software, storage, and error codes
On PC, close overlays, capture tools, RGB controllers, extra launchers, and browsers with many extensions. These can conflict with Fortnite’s anti-cheat.
Keep several gigabytes free beyond Fortnite’s install size on PC and console. Low storage can crash during map loading or asset streaming.
If Fortnite shows a specific crash reason or error code, write it down and check Epic Games Support. After a seasonal update, some crash codes may already be known issues with a fix in progress.
